How do I retrieve an email that no longer exists but was not deleted.

I am using OWA via Google Chrome.  I have a friend who swears that she sent an email (likely originating from Gmail).  The email apparently never arrived.  She resent the message today and it was on my screen and I started reading it, but it DISAPPEARED as I was reading it.  I did not hit the delete button or anything.  What could have happened?  And how do I get this message back?  Thank you!
